U.S. KRAG-JORGENSEN BAYONET and SCABBORD, 1899 DATED This is an original US Krag bayonet marked US 1899. The blade is a little less than 11 3/4 inchs long with no nicks on the edge. The wood grips are in good shape, with some wear, and the release mechanism works. The markings are very clear. Also included is the scabbard for this bayonet. It has some surface rust, but no dings or dents and belt loop still swivels. I have done nothing to restore this bayonet. I'll leave that to the high bidder. I have seen a few of these on eBay from time to time, but very few are in descent shape and still have the scabbard. This is a knife bayonet manufactured to fit the first bolt-action magazine rifle adopted by the US Military. The rifle was based on the Danish Krag while the bayonet was based on - and virtually identical to - the Swiss Schmidt-Rubin Model 1889 . This bayonet - and rifle - saw most of its action during the Spanish-American War and the ensuing action in Cuba .They are very well made, all steel, with wood grips. The hilt configuration is a "bird's head" pommel with the standard push-button/integral spring latch, steel cross guard; grips are wood and held on by flush-mounted rivets. The blade is also well made: steel, single-fullered (both sides), single-cutting-edge with short false-edge towards the tip.
