U.S.M.C. China Service Silver Shot Glass Peiping 1946 This nice old sterling sliver shot glass has a heavy applied dragon around it and is hand engraved Peiping China, U. S. M. C., 1946. It measures 2 ½ inches tall and is 1 5/8 inches in diameter at the top and weighs 1.67 ounces. The bottom bears Chinese hall marks. It is in good condition with some small dents near the base. Peiping was the name of the city that had been known as Peking until 1928. The change of name occurred because China's capital was shifted from Peking, which means "Northern Capital," to Nanjing, which means "Southern Capital." China's capital has shifted between Peking and Nanjing several times during its long history. Peking has been known as Beijing since 1979. The 1st and 6th Marine Divisions were sent to North China in 1945 to assist Chinese Nationalist authorities in disarming and repatriating the Japanese. In addition to accepting the surrender of the Japanese troops in North China, the Marines provided security for airfields, maintenance road workers and at critical points along the railroad. T were several "incidents" or encounters, skirmishes, with forces that were apparently guerrillas on the fringe of the Chinese Communist Army, or just plain bandits, and also hungry civilians who would raid the Division's stores. By the end of 1946, Marine occupation forces had been drastically reduced in China. Terms Of Sale: I will not end an auction early to complete a sale.
