U.S. NAVY MARK V5 NAUTICAL DIVING HELMET Because this is the earliest of reproduction diving helmets, it is difficult to tell it apart fromthe original. This helmet continues to be misrepresented as genuine and makes it easy to sellto the unwary at the high prices of the originals. It is an unfortunate fact that a significant number of unknowlegable collectors have been fooled into placing what they think is a genuine diving helmet in their family room. A genuine Mark V helmet weights about 50 pounds. Most reproductions weigh half as much and are poorly made to minimize materal and labor costs. They tend to be squatty, high polished - some dipped to look old - and light weight with unfinished edges. They look inferior, especially when missing the proper fittings such as the front identification tag. This full sized well made reproduction weighs almost as much as the original, weighing in at approximently 45 pounds. The front tag is beautifully executed and is imprinted with, "U.S. Navy Diving Helmet, Morse Diving Equipment Co. Inc., Boston, Mass., No. 627, Date 8-29-41." It measures 19" tall and 14" wide. With over 25 years of aging, the patina makes this helmet look believably authentic. And it saves you thousands of dollars over the original and the worry of misrepresentation.
