This pair of Japanese kusazoshi, or ukiyo-e book, dates from sometime around 1850-1880, and each contains 9 diptychs by Toyokuni III (also known as Kunisada) as well as 3 single-page prints, and covers that side-by-side form another diptych. This kind of book was the popular fiction of the day, and could be considered a precourser to the modern-day manga. We are unfortunately unable to read the title, but this pair are parts I and II of volume 15 of a multi-volume saga.
Each book has 12 page-leafs, including covers, and every page but the back covers has an ukiyo-e print illustrating the text of the story, of the kind shown in the sample pics. Also included is their original slipcover, as shown in the last sample pic. Considering their age, these books are in remarkably good condition. The pages have little softening, even at the corners, and all remain bright and clear. T is also virtually no yellowing, and no worm damage whatsoever. The silk-thread bindings remain intact and strong, although a couple of the longer vertical lengths between the holes have stretched a little and become a little loose. T are no tears or missing pages, and all the pages remain firmly bound. Each measures W4 9/16" (117mm) X H7" (178mm) X D1/8" (3mm). This item is set to ship via Air Mail, and should arrive within 7-14 days after being posted. General Note about Shipping: For all our items, we set the shipping according to the fastest and most economical method. Generally, we set it as Air Mail if the shipping charge will be around ten dollars or less, and as SAL (economy airmail) if it would be over ten dollars via regular airmail. Nonetheless, we are always happy to change shipping methods if faster (and thus more expensive) or cheaper (and thus slower) shipping is desired. The shipping options available are (from fastest and most expensive to slowest and least expensive): EMS, Air Mail, SAL (economy airmail), Surface. We ship at least once and very often twice a week, and so most of the time items will be in the mail within no more than 7 days after we have received payment. We also always send a brief note informing buyers when their items have shipped.
