Greetings, I have an Australian made MUES Aperture sight, that will fit WW1 303 rifles including the Lee Enfield, Lee Metford and Longtom. These sights were used by Australian Troops for sniping in the early stages of WW1. This is an ultra rare item and would make a fine addition to any collection. John Mues (of Melbourne, Victoria) patented this sight in 1908 and it was put into small-scale production. Pre WW1, to win a place in a major shooting competition a rifleman had to use one of these new sights. In 1914 quite a few soldiers would have taken their aperture sights with them to war knowing that they were still not approved by the military. C E W Bean in the Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-18 makes mention of these sights being used on Gallipoli. Commanding officers turned a blind eye to the attachment of this accessory because of the results in the hands of a marksman. They were easily attached to the SMLE rifle by undoing one screw, removing the rear long-range volley peep and replacing it with the adjustable aperture sight. The Mues sights were designed to be folded flat alongside the rifle when not in use. The Mues sights continued to be used in long range target shooting well after the end of WW1.
