A rare find we are offering to you this week. Produced by The Northwood Glass Co in Martin's Ferry, Ohio circa 1891 We have two of these scarce Northwood Leaf Mold pattern cologne bottles, each in near perfect condition. Done in spatter glass, red cranberry spattered on canary glass, each glows nicely under black light. Not a chip , no scratches. Original stopper is present. The only defect is on the end of the stopper, a small nick. The stopper fits perfectly, and is in the faceted pattern shown in Northwood sales literature. T are a few tiny defects on points of facets on stoppers. A cologne in this pattern is imaged at page 45 of "Harry Northwood, the Early Years, 1881-1900" Heacock, Measell, and Wiggins, shown with a replacement stopper. The fact that this reference book's writers could not find a cologne with original stopper attests to the scarcity of the piece. How special to have two available. However each is being sold separately. This auction is for the cologne bottle pictured. See my other auctions for the matching bottle. Each stands 5 1/2 inches to the top of the stopper, another good indication of originality. They are 3" wide at widest point. Very pretty glass, too, as any Northwood collector is familiar with. Both pieces unmarked. This piece, cologne bottle "B" has a little more red glass than "A", as you can probably see. Inspect images closely for variation in color. According to the book "Harry Northwood The Early Years" by Wiliam Heacock, James Measell and Berry Wiggins the cologne and the fairy light are very unusual . You could be proud to add these to your collection. A very nice example of early Victorian glass offered at NO RESERVE! Shipping on this item will depend on your proximity to Ohio. Use Shipping calculator to determine actual shipping cost to your zip code. If no calculator available at bottom of ad listing, please email us for shipping quote to your zip. Insurance required. We use USPS almost exclusively. Heavy items and multiple piece settings will ship UPS. We will gladly combine multiple auction wins for shipping economy. I do accept checks or money orders as well as Paypal. ~~~~ Attention! Regarding the small nick on the stopper on this bottle. I have had a chance to inspect and photograph this condition closely, and have come to the conclusion that it is indeed not a nick at all, but an in-the-make bubble that was present when the stopper was taken from the glass rod it was formed with, when snapped off the pontil. I have imaged the condition with large magnification lens, and have uploaded to listing. As you can see, the surface of the bubble is perfectly clear, and edges clean. The oblique images show the surface contour of the bubble, very similar in nature to the center bottom of the stopper w it is unground. Flanking the bubble are what I call two "ears" which show tiny striations w glass was broken off with the pontil, but t are no striations in the surface of the bubble itself. In the last, "straight on" image ,the fabric under the stopper is perfectly seen as through a lens in the middle of the bubble, then defracted as the curve of the bubble changes toward the edge. In my opinion, this is not a chip or nick at all, but as it was when it was made. Thank you for your interest! ~~~~~
