The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Madeleine Films, 1964). French (47 X 63 ). This Jacques Demy musical masterpiece combines a haunting score by Michel Legrand, with gorgeous photography, to create an outstanding romantic drama. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg tells the story of a young French auto mechanic (Nino Castelnuovo), who falls in love with a 17-year-old girl (Catherine Deneuve), who works in her widowed mother s umbrella shop. Deneuve becomes pregnant the night before Castelnuovo leaves for war, and now must decide if she will wait for his return, or marry a wealthy merchant. There are separations at the crossfolds, multiple pinholes, small tears, and light surface wrinkles. Fine+.
