Up for auction is a 1850 Staff & Field Officers sword ided to Capt. John B. Honstain with the 4th regiment of the New York Infantry of the Civil War. This is a unmarked H. Sauerbier of Newark, New Jersey. It has the typical spanner nut that holds the guard assembly together that is commonly found on a Sauerbier sword. The blade etching is weak and shows its age. The scabbard on the other hand is in excellent condition with about 60% to 70% gilting on it. Also including in this auction, is the complete documented history from the national archives of John B. Honstain which is a binder with about 1 1/2 inches thick of all of his military and records. John B. Honstain was a very liked officer by his troops but was also in trouble with the law from time to time by the records in his file. He was in many of the famous battles as shown in the history records shown below on the New York Volunteers campaigns. During his time in the military, John B. Honstain was dismissed from the military in August of 1862 for personal reasons and was mustered into the New York Volunteers Infantry in October of 1862. He was captured by the confederates at Batcheldor Creek, North Carolina on July 25, 1863. On July 28, 1863 he was sent to a hospital w he escaped Confederate capture on October 24, 1863. This is just a glimpse of this officers history and t is so much more. I have all of the additional records that are included in this auction. This is a nice piece that will not require work to find the colorful life's story of this officer. Like I said before, this officer was a rebel for his day but was also very much liked by his troops. Do not miss out on this beautiful sword and documentation as a colorful but loved officer of the Union Army of the Civil War. T is so much more of this officers history but I will leave that up to the winning bidder to read. T will be hours of reading on this history. Please review the campaigns that John B. Honstain was in below. This sword will be auctioned with a modest Reserve and as always will start at .99 cents as all my auctions do. Winning bidder to pay $40.00 shipping plus mandatory insurance with costs for insurance being determined at the end of auction based in the actual selling price. Bid with confidence as my feedback tells all. Please ask all questions prior to auctions end and I will do my best to answer them. I will be selling many more Civil War items from my fathers collections during the next several weeks. If you want quality you have come to the right place. Happy Bidding!!
