Union General John Adams DIX signed 1854 check.DIX, John Adams (1798-1879)A veteran of the War of 1812, John A. Dix was called back into service for the Civil War. Born in New Hampshire, he had entered the army as ensign, 14th Infantry, during the War of 1812 and emerged as a second lieutenant of artillery. He remained in the regular army until his 1828 retirement as captain, 3rd Artillery. He was admitted to the bar in the nation's capital and managed his father-in-law's affairs before becoming influential in New York State politics and railroading. He served in the Senate and his antislavery views led him to switch from the Democratic to the Republican Party in 1859. As Buchanan's last treasury secretary, his order to New Orleans that "If anyone attempts to haul down the American flag, shoot him on the spot," has gone down in history. The senior officer in the volunteer service throughout the war, he was considered too old for active field command and was assigned to departmental posts. At first he commanded the old Department of Annapolis -- then Maryland -- which was merged into that of Pennsylvania.
