WILLIAM RUFUS SHAFTER (1835-1906). Brevetted Brigadier General during Civil War. Major General of Volunteers commanding expeditionary force to Santiago de Chile in 1898. Received surrender of the city. Awarded Congressional Medal of Honor in 1895 for gallantry as a 1st Lieutenant at Fair Oaks, Virginia, May 31, 1862. TLS, 1p.4to, Headquarters U.S. Forces, Tampa, Fla., May 8, 1898. Affectionate letter to Lucy Ord Mason, giving family news. "...About the Doctor: I am sorry that I can do nothing for him, but it is out of the question. He need not be at all worried about not seeing service: he will get enough of it before it is over, I think. The chances are that, with the Texas troops, he may now be en route to San Francisco, bound for the Phillipines...". Written at the beginning of the Spanish-American war.
