UNIQUE 1930's VINTAGE PROFESSIONAL WOODEN MARIONETTE This true "one of a kind" performing puppet is from the cast of THE FULLER MARIONETTES of QUINCY , MASS. The marionette measures almost 2 Ft. in Height. The body construction is wood. The Torso is composed of 3 sections with flexible joining. The Knee & Elbows are pinned "lap joints". The head is a hollow Wood Dough casting that was painted with what appears to be artist oil colors. The wig was crafted from brown wool crepe and the "Huntsman" style hat is from a burgundy velvteen matreial. The belted Hunting Jacket and trousers were nicely tailored from a Tan cotton fabric. The black leather, laced leggings over the carved wood shoes effectively create the appearance of tall hunting boots. The marionette is strung from the original "airplane" style wood control with pegged, removable leg bar at an overall height of 52" from the top of the control to the bottom of the "boots". The "FULLER MARIONETTES" ( Buell R . and John W Fuller designed and performed in and around the Quincy, Mass. area in the 1930's and 1940's. They created at least nine different puppet productions during that period. Specific puppet show details are documented in print and can be found in: "THE PUPPET THEATER IN AMERICA" by Paul McPharlin and Marjorie Batchelder McPharlin. Like many puppeteers of that era, the Fullers were inspired by the popular shows of Tony Sarg and Rufus & Margo Rose, which toured around the country. Their resulting work reflects that artisitc inspiration while at the same time establishes their own unique yet traditional style. This Marionette is from the estate of a past president of The Puppeteers of America inc. He acquired it at the PofA National Puppetry Festival held at MIT in Boston, Mass. It resided in his care for the past twenty years. The overall condition is quite good, especially when one considers the age. Obviously it has been well kept and cared for over the past 60 to 70 years. While it is tempting to add this to my personal collection, space and practical considerations dictate that I find another suitable "home" for this great example of the puppeteers art.
