We offer a large and lovely blue transfer platter entitled British Stripe. We purchased this from a British dealer. Since we have never seen the pattern before, we don't think it was exported to the United States during the Nineteenth Century. It was made in the pottery of Reed and Clementson who potted in Hanley from 1833 - 1835. It bears their garter backstamp with pottery initials and pattern name. The distinctive surround has a swirling geometric strip consisting of blue and white areas with mini-patterning superimposed. Note also the shape of the edge which has irregular scalloping aligned with panels on the surround. The center has a star of geometric shapes - most unusual! It is in very good condition. The points on the rim show a bit of wear consistent with its many years, and one can find a very tight curved 1 inch line on the back edge, lost in the patterning on the front. See the picture. Glaze is shiny, and the medium blue color is clear and bright. This platter displays beautifully and would add distinction to a transferware collection because of its unique design and shape.
