CIRCA 1850 CARVED WALNUT SAVONAROLA CHAIR probably ITALIAN PROVENANCE: I bought this very unusual and unique chair in an antique shop in Cleveland, Ohio in 1982. THEY acquired it at auction at CHRISTIES in New York the previous year. It was part of the Fawick collection. NOTE: This actual chair is pictured on pages 40 and 41 of the April 1981 issue of Smithsonian Magazine. I have the issue, and it comes with the chair. As you can see in the pictures, the carvings on this piece are fantastic, depicting Lions, Winged Lion heads, I have researched to identify the other carvings of the fanciful creatures, and have been unsucessful. It very well may be , that they are unique to this chair. At the ends of the arm rests, are two grotesque winged creatures, obviously female, with large pendulous breasts, and a tail which belongs to a marine animal. These same creatures are also depicted on the back rest. Two other full carvings on the arm rests defy description. See the close ups of the mouth. The dark patina and fantastic carvings give this chair a medieval or gothic look. Insured shipping will be by Greyhound to a depot nearest you, and will be $125.00. I will securely, wrap, and package this, and ship within 10 days following payment.Hopefully sooner, but with my work schedule, i don't want any surprises. I have found some slight insect damage on the feet, and bottom of one seat slat. I will treat these areas prior to shipping to be on the safe side (see pics) As you can see, this chair folds up. It was designed primarily for European royalty as portable seating for various events. I am reluctant to part with this, but medical bill persuade me.
