Very Rare Unique No. 0 Early-Style Blowtorch With Cast Tank and Handle – This one-pint, top-fill, gasoline-fuel blowtorch was manufactured by the Unique Mfg. Co. of Chicago, Illinois. The tank and handle are made of cast steel. The steel skirt around the base is also welded around the bottom of the tank. The feed tube, drip cup, filler cap, pump rod, control arm, and sideways-oriented wound-wire control knob are ferrous and either iron or steel. The pump cap and pump knob, as well as the packing nut on the control arm are made of brass. The burner is bronze. The tank is 5 inches in diameter and is 2 3/4 inches in thickness as measured through the center of the tank. The torch has lost almost all of its red enamel paint, and its applied label is no longer present. Thus the torch, as shown, is unmarked as to its manufacturer. Another example of this No. 0 torch retaining both its paint and applied label is shown in photo no. 10. Although dirty, this torch is an excellent example of this early Unique No. 0 Blowtorch. The Unique Mfg. Co. is discussed and its torches illustrated on pages 453-455 in the book Vintage Blowtorches . An example of this cast-steel torch and wound-wire handle is shown from another private collection on page 275 in More Vintage Blowtorches . Please ask any questions before bidding.
