ENGRAVED NEW ZEALAND GREENSTONE MARSDEN PATTERNED POUNAMU FLOWER JADE MAORI TRADITIONALLY BOUND HEI TOKI - designed, hand carved and perfectly finished by New Zealand/Pacific Island Tohunga Master Carver S Funaki. His exquisite and inimitable work is highly collectible especially his Pekapeka, Manaia and Hei Tiki and Hei Toki - recognized to be amongst the best in New Zealand and sold at New Zealand's principal Maori Art Galleries. This is a superb Hei Toki (adze) hand carved from BEAUTIFUL AND UNUSUAL ARAHURA NEPHRITE GREENSTONE POUNAMU JADE - wonderful CRYSTALLINE PATTERNS AND SHADES OF RICH DARK BLUE, GREEN AND GOLD IN THE JADE - from the South Island of New Zealand, expertly bound with traditional crossover binding onto a hand braided adjustable waxed cord. It has traditional Maori engraving on one side. It measures 2.2" by 1.2" with a depth of 8mms at the blade edge. Pounamu is found only in the South Island of New Zealand. Because of this, the island was originally named Te Wāhi Pounamu (the place of pounamu), but over time this name changed to Te Wai Pounamu (the greenstone waters). No other jade should be classified as pounamu as it is a Maori name for the stone. - there are ten main types of pounamu: Arahura - a dark velvet green Inanga - pale blue or green - can be opaque or translucent Totoweka - a rare type - streaked
