About this Item / Description
I am by no means an expert of this nature but I have done my best to find out what I could before posting this auction. From what I have gathered the maker/origin/period of this figurine is still left to be discovered. If you are a collector of such items I am sure you already know about some of the information I have included in this auction, as well as the accuracy of what I learned. I could probably learn quite a bit from you. What I can offer that you don’t know is a bit of personal history concerning this particular doll, which is offered below “The Family Story”. From what I have learned and been told you are bidding on a large bisque German Piano Baby. Although this appears to be much like a Gebruder Heubach Piano Baby I have been kindly informed that it isn’t. I am unsure of the actual maker as are those who informed me (even by someone who owns one like ours). I f you have knowledge you would like to share with me about this item, please feel free to do so. What I do know, please read on... She is a beautiful bisque piano baby contently lying on her stomach, with one leg kicking in the air, her left hand clenched, and her right hand with thumb and index finger outstretched. She has beautiful blue intaglio eyes and a delicate open smile mouth with two lower milk teeth and lightly textured hair. Her pink nightdress is detailed with flower decoration and gilt borders simulating lace with trace of gold. What I do know: More than one source I found referenced their figurines (duplicate versions as what I have) being German Gebruder Heubach piano baby. MOST IMPORTANTLY I know what my mother-in-law shared about her “Piano Baby” and her love of it, and my husband’s recollection regarding conversations about it throughout the years. Cliff notes story is below.I gathered my information from a number of different sources, antique dealers, appraisers, antique internet sources and what I remember my mother-in-law sharing with me (it was her doll). When we arranged for an appraisal of the “Piano Baby” for my mother-in-law, we were told at that time that it was a “Dresden” in excellent condition and appraised at $1200.00. Yes, I know that it may have been slightly inflated. I also know since we (my husband & I) inherited it I have done some reasonable research and found from other sources with the same “Piano Baby” that they reference theirs as “Heubach” figurine. I learned that the unmarked figurine and the faint un-buffed lines on this one is the same as what I have seen in the pictures of those exactly like ours. And this isn’t completely un-heard of from what I have learned. Read below for more about this. Several sites referenced this as a rare Heubach Piano Baby. The Family Story Behind This ItemMy husband (an only child) & I inherited this beautiful figurine from his mother Marjorie, who was born in the early 1920’s. It was originally owned by her parents who it passed on as a gift to her older sister Naomi (born 1909). Naomi owned it until shortly before her death in 1940 when she learned of her illness, and had written a note wishing to pass the doll on to Marjorie. I don’t recall if my mother-in-law said her sister received it sometime in the early 1900’s, 1920’s or early 1930’s. But I do know it was in that time frame. The “Piano Baby” was kept by their mother until 1964 who then passed it on to my mother-in-law as the new rightful owner as deemed by her sister’s wishes. Another sister had always admired and desired t...
