By 1794, Barbary Coast pirates in the Mediterranean Sea spurred Congress to pass the Naval Act establishing the American Navy. During the War of 1812, the "Blue Jackets" drove all significant British forces off Lake Erie and Champlain. The Mexican-American War saw the U.S. Navy blockading Mexican ports, capturing and burning the Mexican fleet in the Gulf of California. In the Civil War, Union blockades on shipping handicapped the Southern effort throughout the conflict. The conflict helped usher in a new era by putting ironclad warships into combat for the first time. After the sinking of the "Maine" the U.S. Navy also played a significant role in the Spanish American War. CONDITION: Good. Internally Clean. Some spotting to covers.....
