RARE 'UNIVERSAL TOOL' ~THAYER'S PATENT 1881 ~8-IN-1~VERY UNUSUAL CAST IRON KITCHEN TOOL~ We've owned this unusual tool for a long time and had a pretty good idea that it was a trivet that had a number of functions. Finally got around to doing a bit or research and we now know about all t is to know......"THAYER'S PATENT UNIVERSAL TOOL", patent number 241,893, May 24, 1881. Google has a new, new to us, Patent Search Engine, for those who don't know. Ask Google for "google patent search" and enter this number and you will find a full description of the "UNIVERSAL TOOL", drawing and all, by William H. Thayer when he applied for his patent in the 1880's. He also called it his 8-in-one Universal Tool. Made for the kitchen, it served as a trivet, a pot carrier, a plate carrier, a bottle opener, a candle holder, a stove lid lifter, a meat tenderizer and a jar opener.....if memory serves correct....check it out. (It also looks like the old fashioned brass knuckle!) The diameter of the circle section is 4 inches and the widest point is 6 inches; it's 3/4 of an inch tall; it's cast iron and has a small amount of rust and no cracks or problems to note. A very unusual tool; you'll go to the head of the "whats-it" class with this guy! Can see no markings, but suppose it had the patent number on it in 1881. Will pack properly and ship promptly. read more
