RARE ANTIQUE AZERBAIJANI-CAUCASIAN CARPET, Circa: 1870-1880's (perhaps earlier?), coming fresh to the market in an excellent state of preservation for its age. The exact size is: 4'-1" x 7'-1" (124 x 216 cm). This very unusual and rare weaving was sold to me by a very knowledgeable dealer in the orient as an "Alpan Kuba". Structurally, it fits more into a Southeast Caucasus/Northwest Persian origin, but I have not been able to find a similarly designed weaving like this one in the rug book literature. However, in studying its structure with the medium brown wool warps, multi-colored wefting being mostly white but with some brown, blue, red, and yellow (see close up photo of the reverse side), and the single side cord overcasting in the color of the weft, this carpet is very akin to the illustrated mid-19th century Armenian palmette carpet published by James D. Burns in "The Caucasus - Traditions in Weaving", 1987, plate 37. When viewed hanging on the wall, the carpet takes on a three dimensional visual effect with the ivory palmettes seeming to be superimposed over brown, blue, and green ancillary designs. This interaction on the tomato red field full of small tertiary motifs and devices keeps the eye in a constant state of flux.
