This hand-sized heavy specimen consists of Epidote and Quartz and came from John Miller's collecion. The Epidote on this piece is so large and yet not a full crystal. About 60% of the specimen is the large Epidote crystals, the remainder is massive. The Quartz is also massive. This piece makes a bold statement as it sits upright aesthetically using the large Epidote crystal as its’ base~! The Epidote is a dark Green color and contrasts sharply to the Quartz. The large Epidote crystal section lies along one entire side and measures 6 cm (length) x 2.3 cm (width) x 2.6 cm (height). If this were a complete crystal, it would have been a real killer~! Our Epidote is smooth on one face, while the other is striated. Unfortunately there is a self-healed crack which is distracting, depending on how you display it. There is some tan dirt and massive Quartz embedded in the Epidote, however it is also slightly lustrous. One side of consists of a Yellowish stained massive Quartz.

This is definitely a dramatic hand-sized specimen, and it is thought-provoking about where it came from. We do not see very many mineral samples coming from Rhode Island . But here one is, and it was found in a Gold Mine in Rhode Island ~! This is not quite the state where you would expect to find a gold mine~! Yes, I did check it under the scope, I did not see any Gold. It’s a great specimen regardless.

John Miller Collection

John lived in Berks County Pennsylvania and for years was a member of the Berks Mineralogical Society. He was heavily into field collecting during the 50’s and 60’s and was best known for collecting large mineral specimens in Canada. He and his ex-wife, Nancy, used to drive all the way to Canada from southeast Pennsylvania for a weekend, and come back with only one specimen… that took up their entire trunk~!! Now that’s a dedicated collector~!! John was also an avid gardener and spent much time in his greenhouse working with hydroponics. He had many crystal specimens in his backyard.

Surprisingly, this is a good representative of Epidote from Rhode Island . If you like specimens from unusual locations, this Epidote is unquestionably from an uncommon site.
