This item is a small 19th century treen biscuit pricker. This pricker measures 4" high and each of the 4 prongs are 1 3/4" long. The condition is very good with nice warm patina. This pricker will make a nice addition to an early kitchen or bakery collection.
The early biscuit prickers were wood and iron and used to prick or stamp the dough for crackers. Early crackers were called biscuits, hence the name biscuit pricker. The dough was pricked so it would not rise during baking, and the cracker or biscuit would be flat. As the years progressed so did the biscuit prickers, and they eventually were make of other material such as tin and wire. If you have been following my postings in the last several weeks, you have noticed that I have been including a different type of biscuit pricker. These are from my out-of-control pricker collection. This is the next to last biscuit pricker from my collection I will be sell -- at least for a while.
