Maori , dating from the second half of the last century. Not of great age, but hand carved by of the Maori people of New Zealand - crafted from a single section of native timber in the traditional manner. Of heavy elliptical shape, the head section is carved with fine symmetrical scroll form decoration. The underside of the hand grip area is concave in profile from the grip pommel to the head. The reverse is undecorated, plain in finish - see image 11. The grip pommel and central area of the front face incorporate carved Tiki faces - the eye sockets of which are inset with polished discs of natural paua shell. The hand grip is finished with a single pierced hole - allowing a wrist cord to be fitted. Overall length - 23" (584mm). Very good, untouched period condition - fine natural colour and patina.
