Offered for your consideration is an unusual vintage Dha type sword with its original scabbard. This style was common to several regions of southeast Asia, although many that I've seen were attributed to Burma (Myanmar). It could have originated in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, or even Vietnam as a war bring-back. The sword was solidly built and has a great look. It was handmade and does have some markings, although I'm not sure what they mean...if anything. Many similar swords were sold as tourist or souvenir pieces, although this example appears to be a traditional piece that was designed for use. It's a solid, no-nonsense sword that was designed to be used. A really unusual feature is a small piece of brass or other gold-toned metal that appears to have been forged into the blade spine for some reason. This appears right between two series of markings on the spine a few inches forward of the handle. The sword does not appear to have seen much use at all and is problem free. It has not been cleaned or buffed and remains original. The sword looks to be of the traditional dha-type design from this region. The blade appears to be hand forged and is of thick carbon steel. It's exceptionally thick just forward of the guard and measures just over 5/15" thick. The blade looks to have been hand shaped and is free of any corrosion or pitting. The sword shows no signs of abuse or rough treatment and has been well cared for. The edge is free of any dings, chips, nicks, or damage. The tip has a very slight burr, although nothing serious. The bolster is of sheet brass or copper and exhibits a nice, natural patina. The handle is very long and will easily accommodate a two-handed grip. It appears to have been crafted from hardwood with a wrapped braided rattan grip. The wrap remains in excellent condition and is free of any damage. There are no torn, broken, or damaged strands and the wrap remains tight. The pommel is also of sheet brass or copper and it remains solid and tight. The entire sword is solid with not a wiggle or rattle anywhere. It has a very sturdy feel, yet the light weight allows for excellent handling. It has a great feel in the hand and is very quick and agile.The blade is 19" and the sword measures 29-1/2" in overall length.The scabbard is the original and remains solid as well. It was crafted from mated sections of wood and tightly bound with braided rattan. It has an added section of what appears to be braided cotton rope. This looks as though it was fashioned to function as sort of a shoulder rig. It's obviously been on the scabbard for a long time and shows some wear, especially around the ends where some of the braiding has unravelled. The scabbard has some light dings and scuffs from storage. It has a crack on one side near the top. All of the rattan bindings remain tight and free of any damage. The sword fits tightly in the scabbard and is held securely.An unusual vintage southeast Asian sword with a great look!! The knife will be shipped insured which is included in the shipping costs.
