OBJECTS OF DEVOTION Vintage ST. CHRISTOPHER Car Badge ~French ~signed PY Description & Payment Information This is a high quality vintage car badge picturing St. Christopher, and signed PY - the French artist Fernand Py. It has a wonderful modernist representation of the saint which is the trademark style of this artist. The medallion is made of solid bronze with thick silver plating, and the margins are marked in French, "Saint Christophe protegez nous" - St. Christopher Protect Us. The lower right is signed by the artist and one of the bails is stamped with a French foundry mark. It measures 2 &1/4" by 1 &3/4" with a substantial weight, and the condition is excellent. Fenand Py (1887 - 1949) is remembered as a true individualist in his artistic expression. In 1920 he joined the "Arche", a group of artists rebelling against traditional religious art. By the 1930's his talents were appreciated by the clergy and the general public, who were attracted to the primitive yet modern accents of his work. Today the art of Fernand Py graces many important collections including the Vatican museum. Please view my other auctions for more antiques from Catholica.
