UNUSUAL ZUNI CORN MAIDEN STONE TURQUOISE FETISH NECKLACE

19 ¾" long, inlay turquoise, pipestone, shell

This is a marvelous and unusual Zuni corn maiden fetish necklace. It consists of a strand of 6 mm polished jasper beads varying in color from tan and cream to gray and black. Hanging from the strand are five hand-carved jasper corn maiden fetishes with inlay faces of pipestone, turquoise and shell. The clasp consists of silver cones and a traditional hook and eye.

The necklace measures 19 ¾" long from end to end. It hangs 11/1/4" from the back of the neck to the bottom of the largest fetish. The fetishes are graduated with the smallest measuring ½" wide by 1 5/8" tall and the largest measuring 5/8" wide by 2 ¼" tall. The necklace weighs 90.4 grams and is in excellent vintage condition.

Each corn maiden is carved front and back on gorgeous multi-colored jasper. The corn maiden represents life to the Zuni. "In the Pueblo Indian culture, corn is to the people the very symbol of life.
