T his is a new handmade xenon gas filled plasma tube that stands 6" tall, is 1 3/4" in diameter at the base, and made from uranium, noviol and clear glass. This decorative glass bottle shaped tube is made in the same tradition as old Geissler tubes, but filled with xenon gas instead of low pressure air or nitrogen. Uranium glass was used extensively in many of the Geissler discharge tubes made around the turn of the last century, and this modern tube also contains old stock uranium glass in the base of the bottle. Uranium oxide in the glass gives it a fluorescent greenish color that glows brightly when the tube is energized. Curiously, it's slightly radioactive, but completely harmless. The yellow colored glass is old stock noviol neon tubing, and the clear glass is a barium-strontium lead free glass.
Another thing that sets this tube apart from antique Geissler tubes is the rare gas that it is filled with. Xenon, the rarest and heaviest of the stable noble gases, is used in this tube at a specific pressure that causes it to form a luminous thread-like discharge that can take on several different appearances, depending on the type of power supply used and how it is connected. The discharge can be very active and fast moving, or slowed down to an undulating crawl. Different effects can be produced by changing the frequency and power going to and through the tube. The tube is also touch sensitive, and will respond to your touch by concentrating the discharge at the point of contact. Another difference from the old Geissler tubes is the quality of the equipment used to process modern gas discharge tubes. This tube was evacuated, heated and filled using modern 2-stage direct drive rotary vane vacuum pumps and filled with 99.995% pure xenon gas that will give it a lifetime measured in decades. It can be run continuously for many years without worrying about it going bad, as t is really nothing to burn out. This unusual one-of-a-kind glass sculpture looks great by itself and may be easily mounted on almost any surface, or built in to a custom application that calls for something really different and truly unique. Give that next steampunk project or science lab creation of yours a feature that will really make it stand out. It can be powered by several different methods, but a high-frequency high-voltage power supply or plasma driver works best. These may be obtained from Tech 22 ( ) Model# L-7020, Information Unlimited ( ) or one can be supplied for an additional $80 with the purchase of this tube. You can also use or build a flyback power supply, or even hack the power supply out of a cheap imported plasma globe or lightning tube. Being handmade, and made one at a time, no two are alike and each one is dated, numbered and signed by the artist, with 30 years experience in glassblowing, plasma sculptures and neon lighting. The tube is guaranteed to operate flawlessly as long as the glass remains intact, providing many years of continuous operation and fascination.
