This piece of uranium ore comes from the historically significant Mi Vida Mine in San Juan County, Utah. Charlie Steen's discovery of this incredibly rich mine in 1952 started the uranium mining boom on the Colorado plateau. This specimen weighs 2.49kg (5.49lb) . On my Geiger counter using a JAN 5979 tube (in a DT-613A probe), I measured 1,250 CPM with the beta shield closed and 4,700 CPM with the shield open on the most active surface.
