Uranophane, ZeuneriteMenzenshwand, Black Forest, Germany2.3 x 1.5 centimeters An excellent thumbnail sized specimen featuring compact radiating groups of Uranophane Crystals from the famous Menzenschwand mine in Germany's Black Forest. Quite an unusual form for Uranophane as this specimen appears as fuzzy botryoidal sps under magnification, with the acicular crystals visible on the broken sps on the edges of the specimen. T are also a few small green crystals, but I won't guess about their identity. The Menzenshwand Mine has produced some of the most interesting uranium microminerals of the European continent, and is unfortunately no longer accessable to collectors. Uranium and thorium bearing minerals are a fascinating subset of the mineralogical world, and when treated with proper respect can form a rewarding aspect of one's collection. Like a poisonous insect or flower, Uranium minerals are often possessed of bright colors and exotic form, making them among the most beautiful of all mineral species, and make for great conversation with noncollectors. Perfectly legal to buy, sell, and possess. T are several excellent articles on safe care and handling of radioactive minerals available on the internet.
