This is a John Bartholomew cloth escape & evasion map. During WWII hundreds of thousands of maps were produced by the British on thin cloth and tissue paper. The idea was that a serviceman captured or shot down behind enemy lines should have a map to help him find his way to safety if he escaped or, better still, evade capture in the first place. A map like this could be concealed in a small place ( a cigarette packet or the hollow heel of a flying boot ), did not rustle suspiciously if the captive was searched and, in the case of maps on cloth, could survive wear and tear and even immersion in water. The scheme was soon extended to cover those who had already been captured, although a certain amount of ingenuity was required to get the maps into the POW camps. The maps themselves were mainly small scale, covering large areas; many were copied from maps then available from Bartholomew's in traditional paper form. (Bartholomew's generously waived all royalties, for the privilege of helping the war effort). This is a vintage, original Escape and Evasion cloth map that was carried by a USAFF B-17 Navigator/Captain ( WILL PROVIDE NAME TO WINNER ). It has been stored since his return from the war over 60 years ago. He served with the 336 th Heavy Bomb Squadron , w he flew on 35 combat bombing missions , carrying this map into combat in the air offensive of Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes and Rhineland bombing campaigns. The 335 th was attached to the 95 th Bomb Group attached to the 13 Combat Bombardment Wing stationed at Harham Air Base, England northeast of London from May 11 th , 1943 to June 18 1945. The 95 th Air Group was awarded 3 Distinguish Unit Citations, (the most awarded to any group in the war) for actions 17 Aug. 1943 Regensburg, Germany aircraft factory raid, 10 Oct. 1943 Munster, Germany marshalling yards raid and 4 March, 1944 Berlin, Germany. The 95 th is credited with the most aircraft destroyed by a single group, 425 planes, 1st air group to bomb Berlin, first 8 th Air Force General to be killed flying a combat mission and last aircraft lost in European War by hostile fire 13 June, 1945. The 336 th hit enemy troop concentrations during the D-Day invasion to assist Allied Troops to breakout at St Lo. in July 1944. They also dropped ammunition, food and medical supplies to Polish Troops 18 Sept. 1944 and attacked enemy transportation during the Battle of the Bulge Dec 1944 & Jan. 1945. The Group flew 320 Combat Missions with a loss of 157 aircraft. During World War II, the United States and Great Britain produced silk maps and cloth maps for Allied military personnel to use as escape maps. In 1940, the British military intelligence unit, known as MI 9, started issuing silk maps for use by British aircrews shot down over enemy occupied territory in Europe. The silk maps were intended to assist airman in evading capture. MI 9 also smuggled silk and tissue paper escape maps into POW camps in Germany along with other escape aids to encourage POWs to attempt escape. When the U.S. Army Air Corp started operations out of England they were issued the English maps until the USAFF could make their own. is a link to a Great website about these wonderful pieces of World War II memorabilia.Buyer pays all shipping fees & insurance (recommended).
