This is the first Mustang to be used in the conflict. Known by the British as the Mustang I and by the USAAF as the Apache, the aircraft was powered with the Allison engine providing great low altitude performance. To improve high altitude performance the British installed their supercharged Merlin engine (as used in the Spitfire and Hurricane). This designed was adopted by the US giving rise to the 'B/C' version and subsequently the 'D' version of this famous fighter. This particular example has been recast from an original using black polyurethane resin that is much more stable (doesn't 'melt') than the cellulose acetate used in the originals. A beautiful model with a wingspan of wingspan 6 1/4", body 5 1/2" . Well marked on the fuselage bottom with 'P-51', the mold date of June '42, along with the Cruver 'Circle C' logo and the boxed "US" denoting country of manufacture.
