JAMES LAWRENCE "DON'T GIVE UP THE SHIP" Offered is the ORIGINAL 1813 steel plate engraving of James Lawrence with the battle scene of the USS Chesapeake and HMS Shannon in the vignette below the portrait. Thi original was first published in 1813 immediastel upon his death as the country mourned. (Actually, a reproduction of this is available in my store). This very rare piece of our naval heritage has been very carefully archived to assure that this historic piece continues for many generations to come. The process is very complex and entails, cleaning, deacidification, and defungiciding (no foxing, which if left unchecked,is not harmful to the piece but coulds be very much so to you). This engraving is absolutely pristine. Any winner assumes the role of custodial protector. Ultimately, it's our legacy which will be the winner. James Lawrence was initially under the tutelage of Edward Preble in the US involvement in the Tripolitan Wars. The influence of Edward Preble on these great heros of the War of 1812 cannot be minimized. This is an appropriate portrait originally painted by Gilbert Stuart of James Lawrence, Captain of the USS Chesapeake.
