Up for auction is an old bronze bookend in the form of a ship's wheel with a central medallion featuring the oldest US Navy vessel afloat, the USS Constitution aka "Old Ironsides". Launched in 1794, the USS Constitution is an important and iconic American Navy ship most famous for her conquests during the War of 1812. The bookend is partly made of original material taken from the ship and sold as souvenirs to help pay for the ship's restoration in 1927. The base reads "This material was taken from U.S. Frigate Constitution 1927". It is in very good condition with patina from age and there is a piece of metal attached underneath which causes the bookend to lean forward slightly. Please see photos carefully for details. Measures about 6 5/8" H x 5 7/8" W x 1 3/8" D. Fresh out of a fine old estate!Be sure to check out my other auctions for more treasures from the same estate!
