Up for sale is an original US Navy Bureau of Ships War Damage Report, marked "Condfidential," which relates to the torpedoing and subsequent loss of the gunboat USS Erie in November of 1942 off Curacao, N.W.I. Whenever a U.S. Navy vessel was damaged or sunk by enemy action, the Bureau of Ships would investigate and produce one of these reports for the benefit of ship designers, builders, and crew. The gunboat USS Erie was escorting a convoy when it was attacked by a U-Boat, torpedoed, and severely damaged. The ship limped back to port only to sink before salvage operations could begin, and the report discusses what might have been done differently to save the vessel. Condition is very good, with a nice, tight binding and clean, white pages. T are a number of black-and-white photographs of the doomed ship after the attack, as well as a beautiful fold-out diagram (see photo). Printed by the U.S. Hydrographic Office. Payment is required within 24 hours of auction close unles previous arrangements have been made. Authenticity guaranteed forever. No reserve.
