The USS Forrestal lost 134 crew membersin a 1967 explosion and fire caused by the override of several safetyprecautions. It started with an electric surge launching a missile from one of the Skyhawks on board, which ignited other Skyhawks with bombs. The Navy made changes in their safety rules as a result.
This well-preserved thick vinyl mat is a certificate of recognition of a man's service on the USS Forrestal. He served twice during the Mediterranean Cruise in 1960 and 1961. T is no reference to his rank, if any, or how he served on the aircraft carrier. Three commanding officers are also listed on the mat. The mat is 24 1/4 by 17 1/4 inches and is in excellent condition. The colors are still true. T are no rips or scratches. T is only one tiny smudge under the lower date "61", which may be an original smudge. Printed on the mat is: an illustration of the USS Forrestal, a basic map of the Mediterranean area, and Old Man Winter at the ships wheel. Also included in the deal will be a 7 x 16 inch photograph (repairable), found with the mat, of the N.T.S. Newport Co. 618 crew, 3rd week. Shipping within the U.S. is $9.00 by U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail, including insurance. Shipping outside the U.S. is $29.00 by U.S. Postal Service Parcel Postst Air, including insurance.
