V. Rare Gothic 16th, 17th C. Italian Inlay Chair ~ 1600
Venetian Renaissance ~ Museum Quality Tonight we're listing some wonderful early carved furniture from the late 1500's to the 1800's! If you like this style, make sure to check out our other auctions! We always try to sprinkle in some of these rarer pieces thoughout the year! ~ This chair is part of our collection we've had for some time, and as we like to offer a wide variety of furniture, this is a particularly rare example. We guarantee this to be at least an early 17th c. Italian chair. We fully realize lots of copies have been made similiar to this form, but we have no doubt that this is the real thing. The form is amazing as is the construction and patina! It appears to be all original, even the seat, which are typically replaced or broken on pieces this early. A very similiar chair sits in permanent exhibit at the Isabella Gardener Museum in Boston. The museum describes their chair as a Venetian straight chair, 16th or 17th c. If you love early gothic and renaissance art and furniture, we highly recommend a visit! Below we included a reference picture similiar to this chair. Unfortunately a picture of the Gardener chair is not available. ~ Made primarily of walnut, with mortise and peg construction throughout, the pegs are original and some are rising out as is normal and a sign of originality. Unlike alot of early English furniture t is very little rot on the feet. Floors were damper in the northern countries, contributing to that common maladay. The inlay and burl is fairly simple and in striking contrast to the darker patina surrounding them. The typically Venetian carvings are robust and compliment the overall form without dominating it. I particularly like the post carvings. The tops have a floral quality, more delicate and fine than the other carvings, obviously meant to be looked at and admired! The markings are almost identical to the Gardener chair, the two arches that almost look like eyes, and the interesting star-like impressions could be the makers mark. ~ Condition is fine, original and sturdy with excellent patina. The dimensions are " high, " wide, " deep, and a seat height of ". The very best of luck and make sure to check out our other unique auctions of Mission, Victorian and Early furniture! We also take checks and MO's....checks must clear:-) Click to Remember Lily Click to read an article about us in the eBay Chatter
