Offered is a beautiful and monumental Despondency vase by Van Briggle Art Pottery. The vase is in mint condition with no cracks, chips, crazing, or repairs. The glaze color is matte Ming Turquoise. The vase is large, standing about 17 1/2 inches in height. The bottom is properly hallmarked and displays a date code of V7 (2007). The original factory price sticker of $495.00 is still attached. Also included is a hand carved jichi wood stand. The Despondency vase won Artus Van Briggle wide acclaim for its artistic merit. It was allegedly purchased by the Louvre for the unheard of sum of $3000 after it won first prize at the Paris Salon exhibit in 1903. The vase consists of a despondent man moulded into the rim. The vase is thought to be a self-portrait of Van Briggle. He was in poor health, suffering from TB, and died in 1904. Vase will be shipped via FEDEX GROUND.
