Colorado Springs based art potter Van Briggle pays tribute to the history of their home state with this great pair of Native American portrait plaques by Van Briggle. Nicely detailed soft high relief. Colored turquoise. The woman is called So Ya Zhe (Little Star) the man is A Ya Ni (Big Buffalo). We do not know which people this couple represents. Apache, Arapaho, Cheyenne and Commanche are all native to Colorado.
Each measures 3-7/8 x 6 inches. Good to very good condition. Little Star has one very small flea bite. It may be a manufacturers blemish. This flea bite is rather hard to see (it's the third photo) and is on her hair where her ear is located. There are no other chips, cracks, or other damage to either plaque. Made 1920s-40s in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Van Briggle mark and other info scratched into back of each as shown. Please see our inventory for more Van Briggle pottery as well as fine antiques of all kinds.
