Dirk Van Erp Hand-Hammered Copper Bowl FINE CRAFTSMANSHIP FROM THE ARTS & CRAFTS ERA Offered is an original arts & crafts era hand-hammered Dirk Van Erp copper bowl. The piece is signed with the windmill over the open box signature (see photograph), which was used by Van Erp from approximately 1915 through 1929, while Dirk Van Erp was still alive and running his San Francisco metalworks shop. The bowl is made of solid copper and has a hefty feel to it. The circumference of the bowl at its widest point is 27 1/2 inches. The diameter of the top opening of the bowl (which is not perfectly symmetrical) is 8 inches. The diameter of the base of the bowl is 7 1/4 inches. Height of the bowl is 3 inches. The bowl is dent free. The exterior of the bowl has a coppery brown patina with dark brown, black, and reddish areas. I believe this may have been repatinated at some point (I have never seen another Dirk Van Erp bowl with a patina exactly like this), but I am certainly no expert. In any case, the patina is stunningly beautiful now. The patina on the inside of the bowl ranges from chocolate brown to almost black. The accompanying photographs, taken in available sunlight against a white background, depict the patina accurately. The surface of the bowl is extremely shiny and reflective and feels as if it has been waxed. It has very fine hand-hammering marks throughout. T is age-appropriate verdigris (oxidation) on the inside of the bowl w the bottom was attached during initial construction. The Dirk Van Erp signature mark is on the inside, rather than the bottom, of the base. Overall an excellent example of arts and crafts era craftsmanship. Dirk Van Erp, a native of Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, learned his craft in the family hardware business. He emigrated to the United States in 1886. In 1910, he established Dirk Van Erp Studios in San Francisco, primarily making high-quality lamps with copper bases and mica shades. His shop also produced an assortment of hand-hammered vases, bowls, trays, desk accessories, candlesticks, and other items. Dirk Van Erp died in 1933. By emphasizing craftsmanship, using only the highest quality materials, and limiting production of items, Dirk Van Erp created true works of art that are even more appreciated in this century than they were in the last. Shipping is $20 via USPS Priority Mail (Insured). Payment must be received within 7 days of auction close. Georgia residents must include 7% Georgia sales tax.
