This is an absolutely stunning... tall... footed Cake Plate... with an unbelievable... almost crystal like... Vaseline body glass. It stands over 6 inches tall... 10 ¼ inches ether way across the large “square” top... and nearly 6 inches across the broad... stable... and nearly “tip proof” bottom. You won’t have to worry about this beauty being “tipsy”... when cutting and serving off this lofty platform. After a close examination... I’d say that this exceptional piece of Vaseline Glass appears to be in excellent condition. This is a heavy piece of glassware... probably in the 5 to 6 pound range. I’m finding no “maker’s mark” on this stately Cake Plate... which is not surprising. Over the years the only identification placed on a lot of glassware was a simple “paper label”... and these of course were lost in the very first warm soapy bath the piece was subjected to. In some cases we recognize a pattern and can attribute it to a specific maker. But in the past 30 or so years... so many glassmakers have closed their doors... leaving their glass molds to be “scattered in the winds”... through auctions and private sales... that it’s almost impossible to know who has what now-a-days!!!... And... how about this pattern???... I’ve heard it referred to by collectors as... the “Elizabeth” pattern... and also as... the “Peacock” pattern. The original name may be either... or neither... but the design in the pattern does resembles the spread out tail feathers of a Peacock... and so the name “Peacock” has remained the most popular name. The 1-½ inch tall “skirted” outer rim carries an assembly of oval “shields”... each acting like a small “magnifying glass”. Above this stands a “soft sawtooth” rim or lip... ¼ inch high... to secure cake crumbs... and keep them from “raining down” on the table below. Someone said that if you turned this beauty up side down... you could use it for “chips and dip”... with the dip in the center... and the chips in the lower section. T’s a nice 3/4-inch lip that would keep the chips contained. Personally... I would like to see it with a three layered... extra moist... banana cake perched right t in the middle... and covered with blanket of creamy smooth peanut butter icing!!!... Ooohhhh... makes my mouth water... but I shudder at the thoughts of all those calories!!!... Vaseline Glass is one of those... “you love it... or you hate it”... glass colors. Collectors that “love it”... can’t get enough of it... and those who “hate it”... can’t even begin to understand us collectors that can’t get enough of it!!!... I might also mention that Vaseline glass has becoming quite scarce in the marketplace. This is due primarily to tighter controls government has placed on the use of a key ingredient... uranium... that is needed to make this color of glass. Uranium is also employed in the production of armor piercing shells used by the military... and I also feel sure that the tighter controls on uranium was put in place to keep it out of the hands of would-be terrorists... hoping to build a “dirty bomb”. Uranium not only gives Vaseline glass its intriguing yellow green color but it is also what makes the glass give off its brilliant fluorescent glow under Black Light. Once again I find myself writing a description for a stunning piece of glassware that just seems to cry out to me... “Don’t do this... Don’t let me go!!!...” I’ve loved and collected this Vaseline Glass for more years than I’d like to admit to... but now... being in the autumn of my years... and being surrounded by literally thousands of gorgeous pieces of glassware in my own 50 plus years collection... and having both individual pieces and collections being offered to us on almost a daily basis... I have to face reality... I simply cannot keep every beautiful piece of glassware that I encounter... and I’ve let some real beauties “slip through my fingers” in the recent past!!!...
