This is a very rare Order of St. Gregory the Great Knight's Class Medal issued by the Vatican as a Papal Order of Chivalry. This medal is made of Bronze Gilt and finely crafted enamel work. The obverse cartouche shows the portrait of Pope St. Gregory with the dove of the Holy Spirit at his ear surrounded by blue enamel and the motto "S. Gregorius Magnus" around it. The cartouche is set in a an enameled red cross suspended by a laurel wreath done in green enamel. It is suspended from a correct red and gold silk moire ribbon. On the reverse cartouche are the words "PRO DEO ET PRINCIPE" and "GREGORIUS XVI P. M. ANNO I". Some of the enamel is missing from the rear cartouche. Other than that the medal is in very fine condition considering it is most likely a century old. These medals are only awarded to highly influential gentlemen who performed a great service to the Church. T were not commonly awarded. It is a great example of a rare European Knighthood medal and a great piece of Catholic History.
