This is a genuine antique engraving titled "Venice - The Dogana." This print is in excellent condition and was published in the London Art Journal in 1849, a very old item. This was engraved from an original painting by English artist JMW Turner. The print is accompanied by an article describing the career of the artist and the original painting by a contemporary (1849) art critic. A very lovely antique print! English landscape artist J.M.W.Turner, a Londoner born and bred, went to the Royal Academy School of art when he was only 15 years old. One year later his picture was accepted in the Summer Exhibition of 1790. Elected an Associate of the Academy, which was very supportive of his free art style that evolved after his study of the Classic artist movement of old Master painters. Turner studied the science of light and colour, the theory in particular that yellow was closest colour to the production of white light in painting. Amongst his contemporaries he was a unique artist, both in freeing himself from all past artist traditions and art movements. He was to open the way for a visionary anticipation of modern painting.Dimensions of the print area are, minus margins, approx. 7 by 10 inches, and the overall size of the sheet is approx. 9 by 12 inches. It is printed on a high quality paper, blank on the reverse side. T is a white margin on all sides, and the print has been cleaned and is free of age toning and foxing spots. This is not a reproduction or reprint. It is a vintage engraving, over 160 years old, and guaranteed to be as described. Steel Engraving: A print produced by carving the lines of an image into a metal plate (copper or steel) with a tool called a burin. The lines produced by the carving are inked, and a dampened sheet of paper is pressed on to the plate. The ink is transferred to the paper producing the image. This type of printing was introduced in the 15th century and is a form of intaglio printing. A wood engraving is made in a similar fashion using wooden plates of oak or beech.
