Here is an authentic A.G. Spalding brand Greenwood tennis racquet circa 1905 with the name "Starr Williams" etched into the side of the neck. This is the middle name of tennis legend Venus Williams, whose full name is Venus Ebony Starr Williams. Her father and coach, Richard Williams, also named his recent son Dylan Starr Richard Williams. The name clearly is meaningful to him, and he trained his daughters from birth to play tennis. It may have belonged to a Williams family relative, or may be an enormous coincidence. I cannot confirm or deny that this racquet belonged to a namesake of the Williams family, but it is a possibility. It's a risk-reward investment for serious collectors. If it did belong to the namesake of Venus Williams, then it is nearly priceless. Purchased from a Pennsylvania antique racquet collector. Strings are old-gut, but have been restrung at some point. Racquet itself shows some slight wear mostly to the varnish of one side of the handle, but for a 100+ year old racquet is in very good condition. Measures 26 3/4" in length. All offers considered. Wisconsin buyers pay sales tax 5.0%.
