This wonderful animalier oil painting on panel is signed Eugene Verboeckhoven and is attributed to the noted Belgian painter, Eugene Charles Verboeckhoven (1798-1881) . Pictured are a handful of sheep and lambs gathered at the opening of a barn. A wall runs along the right side where a large sheep appears rubbing against a red blanket or possibly a farmer's cape that rests upon a barrel. Chickens roam the foreground. A bright blue sky with puffy clouds is contrasted by the dark background of the pen, hidden from the sun's rays. This realistic work illustrates magnificent use of light and shadow.
Additional images forwarded upon request. Panel measures 11 3/4" by 16" (29.8 cm by 40.6 cm) and frame measures 26 1/2" by 22 3/8" by 3 1/4" (56.9 cm by 67.3 cm by 8.2 cm). Gilt wood frame appears to be original to the painting, and features rather elaborate decoration. Frame was made in three sections. Running glass is definitely very old and may even be original to the frame. This work is being sold on behalf of a collector and dealer in Manhattan who purchased the work some years ago from a family that owned the painting since the late 19th century. Eugéne Joseph Verboeckhoven was a portrait, landscape, and animal painter from the Belgium school. Born in Warneton in 1788/9, he died in Bruxelles (Bruselles) in 1881. He and his brother Charles Louis (1802-1889) received their early schooling as a sculptor under their father, Barthélemy Verboeckhoven (1854-1840). Verboeckhoven continued the tradition of the Dutch school. He studied the works of animal painters Paul (Paulus) Potter and Paul (Balthasar) Ommeganck (1755-1826) to develop his own style by paying attention to detail and anatomy. (Ommeganck was considered one of the finest sheep painters of his day.) He also followed another Dutch tradition of collaborating with other painters on a painting. His main collaborators were Belgium painters Henry Campotosto, Louis Pierre Vervée (1807-1877) and Dawalle. Verboeckhoven was a very careful painter who took great care with each work. His works are characterized by a velvety, golden light that washed over the subject. Verboeckhoven sought and achieved an international reputation, and his works were popular during his lifetime in the United States, England and Germany. He was a member of the Academies of Belgium, d'Anvers and St. Petersburg. He exhibited many times in Paris, Bruselles and London, as well as Antwerp and St. Petersburg. Awards included the La Croix de la Légion d'honneur, l'ordre de Léopold de Belgique, du Christ de Portugal and la Croix de Fer d'Allemagu. Verboeckhoven's works are held in the collections of dozens of museums around the globe, including (among others): Musée Aix; Musée Amsterdam; Musée Municipal, Amsterdam; Musée Anvers; Berlin Museum; Musée Bruxelles; Musée Bêrme; Frankfort Museum; Musée Gratz; Musée Liége; Leeds Museum; Liverpool Museum; Musée Montréal; Wallace Museum, London.
