A spiritual treasure: HOLY FACE OF CHRIST/ VEIL OF VERONICA RELIC WITH SIX RARE RELICS OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST Rome, ca. 1825 This is undoubtedly the most precious of the five Holy Face relics we offer herewith for your kind consideration. It is another pre-1848 relic print, not only of the "Volto Santo in S. Pietro di Roma" (Holy Face in St. Peter of Rome), but also of the 2nd most important relic of the Vatican Basilica, the Holy Lance - the very lance used by the Roman soldier Longinus to pierce the side of Christ. The cloth bears its original seal, which you also find on the official authentication document, fixed on the reverse of the frame, signed by the Canon Don Petrus Lascaris Darmis on 15 January 1825. It is surrounded by an elegant nut wood frame, 12 x 9 inches in size. The fine linen cloth, printed in ca. 1750, is enclosed by a filigree embroidery, a Sister's work of thrilling beauty. Between colourful flowers and other decorations, SIX RARE RELICS of the LIFE OF OUR LORD are placed, enhulled in fine silk: * Ex domo St. Anna: Of the House of St. Anne, Mother of Our Lady, in Sepphoris * De Domo Lauretana: Of the Holy House of the Annunciation, brought from Nazareth to Loreto/Italy by the Byzantine noble family "Angeloi", venerated by many great Popes including John Paul II and Benedict XVI. * Ex Praesepio Christi: Of the Crib (Holy manger) of Christ * Monte Oliveti: From the grottoe in which Our Lord stayed on the Mt. Olives, where he taught the Lord's Prayer * Monte Calvari: Of Calvary Hill * Sepulcro Christi: Of the empty tomb of Christ, site of His glorious resurrection. * THE HOLY FACE: It is one of the most holy relics in Christianity: The "Veil of Veronica" or "Holy Face", preserved in Rome since the time of Emperor Tiberius (1st Century) and venerated since the 8th Century in St. Peter's Basilica. According to the legend, Veronica was a pious woman from Jerusalem who encountered Christ on His way to Calvary and, full of compassion, used her veil to clean His face from sweat and blood. When she took it back, His Most Holy Face appeared miraculously on the cloth! Next to the Turin Shroud, the "Veronica" is another image of Christ "not created by human hands", inspiring Christian iconography until today. Veronica's encounter became a regular station on the Way of the Cross, and even today, once a year, pilgrims receive a blessing with the most holy relic in St. Peter's on Passion Sunday . It is kept in a special chapel in one of the four main pillars of St. Peter. In the 19th century, the veneration of the Holy Face was propagated by St. Pope Pius IX and, among others, St. Therese de Lisieux, who took the name "Theresia of the Infant Jesus and the Holy Face". This was caused by a miracle. During the revolution of 1849, when the Pope had to flee to Gaeto, St. Pius IX ordered the Holy Veil to be publicly exposed between the feasts of Christmas and Epiphany. On the 3rd day of the exposition, the face of Our Lord on the cloth became clearly visible and appeared to be alive, surrounded by a soft light. The Canons of St. Peter immediately rung the bells, and crowds of people came to watch the 3 hours long manifestation. One of the canons was ordered to draw the face as it appears during the miracle and the Pope later ordered an improved version of this drawing to be imprinted on linen cloths, which, after being touched to the original relic (and therefore becoming 2nd class relics) were distributed among the faithful. This custom was continued for over 50 years. But even before this miracle, the Veil of Veronica was venerated. This is one of the earlist relic cloths we know of it, created in ca. 1750, printed on finest white linen, sealed with the red wax seal of the Archpriest of St. Peter's Cathedral.
