V. / Dedicated unto the Kings most excellent Majesty. / … Nationum Origo. / Printed by Iohn Norton, for Ioyce Norton, and Richard Whitaker, and are to be sold; at the Kings Armes, in S-Pauls-Church-yard. 1634.” 1634, quarto. Printed at London by John Norton and bound in 20th century half-morocco over boards, with blindstamped bands upon the spine and the title and date of publication in gilt. The volume measures 19.5 cm by 15.0 cm by 2.5 cm; each leaf measures about 187 mm by 144 mm. The volume is complete in all respects; it collates *-***4, A-Z4, Aa-Xx4 and is paginated [24], 338, [14]. THE ‘RESTITUTION OF DECAYED INTELLIGENCE IN ANTIQUITIES,’ ONE OF THE MOST FASCINATING BOOKS OF THE 17TH CENTURY. INCLUDED IN THIS VOLUME IS THE FIRST ITERATION IN ENGLISH OF THE TALE OF THE PIED PAPER, ALONG WITH TALES OF ENGLISH WEREWOLVES, AN ANGLO-SAXON DICTIONARY, AND NUMEROUS METAL-CUT ENGRAVINGS OF THE MOST SINGULAR AND CHARMING NATURE, MOST OF WHICH DEPICT PAGAN IDOLS. Nicolson calls this ‘A valuable work,’ and it is certainly one of the most diverting of early English printed books, containing a great volume of information concerning the origins of the English nation, culture and language. From wikipedia: “Under the name of Rowlaunde (late Rowlands), Richard went to Christ Church, Oxford, in 1564, where he may have studied early English history and the Anglo-Saxon language. Leaving the university without a degree (having become a Catholic), he was indentured to a goldsmith, and became a Freeman of the Company of Goldsmiths in 1574. He published in 1576 a guidebook to Western Europe, translated from the German, entitled The Post of the World. At the end of 1581 he secretly printed an account of the execution of Edmund Campion but was discovered and 'being apprehended, brake out of England'. In exile he resumed the name of Verstegen. In Paris he was briefly imprisoned at the insistence of the English Ambassador; in Rome, he was the recipient of a short-lived pension from the pope. In both of these cities he published accounts of the suffering of priests in England. In 1585 or 1586 he moved to Antwerp, and set up in business as a publisher and engraver, an intelligencer, and a smuggler of books and people. He spent the rest of his long life in Antwerp, dying there in 1640.” The binding is in excellent condition, with strong hinges and a strong book-block, and with only the slightest wear at the edges. Internally, the volume is also generally in very good condition, with generally clean pages, clear print and ample margins throughout. The engraved illustrations are excellent impressions throughout. There is slight pinkish toning of the engraving upon the title, and slight foxing at the edges of the first two leaves. The front endpaper bears the 19th or 20th century bookplate of one ‘Chapman-Purchas,’ while the verso of the title bears the bookplate of the Reverend R.A. Perkins, dated 1732. A VERY ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE 1634 EDITION OF VERSTEGAN’S “RESTITUTION OF DECAYED INTELLIGENCE IN ANTIQUITIES,’ ILLUSTRATED WITH NUMEROUS METAL-CUTS. Please take the time necessary to review the photos below in order to gain a better understanding of the content and condition of the volumes.
