The ARTIST:
This model skull was sculpted by dinosaur artist Lasha Tschondia of the Republic of Georgia . Tskhondia has made models of animals from childhood. He is now to 29 years old. He is, by trade, a professional sculptor. He completed is training at the Art Academy of Georgia (Russia). He has been engaged in paleon- tology for about 16 years. He studied paleontology under the guidance of paleontologist Dr. Viacheslav Chchikvadze. In 1996, he became acquainted with Dr. Spencer Lucas of the NMNH, when he was in Tbilisi. Dr. Lucas initiated his visit to the USA. He has worked on many different original paleontological sculptures with a number of US organizations.

Name: Complete TYRANNOSAURUS REX SKULL, 1/10 Scale Replica

BACKGROUND
The " tyrant lizard king " or Tyrannosaurus rex is probably the most well known of all dinosaurs. From Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Lost World to Jurassic Park, it has fascinated and frightened dinosaur lovers of all ages for over a century. T.rex was one of the largest terrestrial, meat eating animals that ever lived; it reached lengths of 45 feet (14 meters) and weighed over 5 tons (about the weight of a modern African elephant). T.rex stood on two pillar-like legs with its 6 meter tail extended back to counter-balance a massive 1.4 meter long head. Everything about this animal was huge: its teeth; its head; its clawed feet; and, more than likely, its appetite. For food it hunted herbivores, such as hadrosaurs and ceratopsian about 65-67 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous. Its fossilized remains have been found in western North America.

CLASSIFICATION
Tyrannosaurus rex is a theropod, an elite group of specialized predators which can be distinguished from other dinosaurs by over 20 skeletal features which are unique to this group. Some of these distinguishing characteristics include clawed hands, hollow bones and a bipedal stance for walking and running. Most theropods can be broken into three subgroups: the more primitive ceratosaurs; the large carnosaurs; and the smaller, bird like coelurosaurs. The carnosaurs themselves can be separated into two families: allosaurs and tyrannosaurs. Some of the T.rex's closest tyrannosaur relatives include the Albertosaurus , Nanotyrannus , Tarbosaurus and Daspletosaurus .

When you study the skull of Tyrannosaurus rex, several things stand out. The teeth are always noticed. They were large and dangerous. They grew up to 20 cm in length (7"). The upper and lower teeth did not touch when the mouth closed. Rather, they passed near each other like blades of scissors, cutting sections of flesh out of the prey. Because of the configuration of the upper and lower teeth, Tyrannosaurus did not chew its food, but had to swallow chunks of meat whole. All its teeth had serrations on both front and back edges. It is thought that these serrations acted to increase the cutting ability of the tooth during eating. Teeth were constantly forming, erupting and falling out during the lifetime of the animal.
As one tooth was being used, another was forming to take its place, as in modern sharks.
