A very early (Circa early1700s) tube pontil freeblown storage vessel. Height just under 11" width at base 5" These are sometimes refered to as "black glass" but the color is actually a dark olive green. These jars were hand blown, without using a mold. To form the jars, the glassblower would blow the jar and roll it on a "marveling" table to form the shape. Once the general shape of the jar was formed, the jar was attached at the base to a rod called a "pontil", and then the lip of the jar was broken or sheared off, and was reheated to form the neck and to smooth the lip.The scar on the base was left when the jar was broken away from the pontil. On finer glass, such as tableware and decorative objects, the pontil was often ground away or fire polished to make it smooth. However, storage jars were utilitarian objects sold at low prices, so this additional step was rarely taken. Used in the 1700s to store fruits and other foodstuffs, etc, they were covered with a piece of leather or cloth ties around the neck, or a"witch ball", a blown glass sp was used to cover the contents. The objective was not hermetic sealing, but simply to keep the dust, bugs and so forth out.! This jar is in exceptional condition, with no cracks or chips, and very little wear. The glass is very crude, with bubbles and character galore. The base has a wonderful blob in the center surrounded by a large circular pontil scar. These jars seldom come up for sale , and because they are hand blown, each is unique. When a fine example such as this is offered for sale, it quickly dissappears into a collection, w it will remain for years. They are available less frequently as the years go on. I purchased this in a group from a French dealer some time ago- because of the falling value of the dollar, it is unlikely I will be able to aquire any more at any kind of reasonable price. I calculate it would cost me over $200 plus shipping to purchase another in France, even if one was to become available. Check out my other items ! If you purchase more than one item in a week, please let me know. I will be happy to combine shipping to save you money!!
