This is a very small and charming shell box that I would date to the early 19th century. The top is shell with metal stringing in the corners. The front and back sides of the box are a lighter color shell, and the two end sides are a darker more mottled variety of shell. The box is raised on little white ball feet that appear to be porcelain. T is a tiny brass knob in the front that attaches to an interior locking sort of mechanism, but I cannot imagine being able to twist a knob that small with your fingers so, perhaps that is not it's purpose. The interior of the box is lined with dark red paper that is embossed with a branch motif. T are some small losses around the edge of the box, and t appears to have been a truly tiny square of something inlaid in the top that is now missing. The box measures approximately 2.5" by 1.5". The top is slightly domed so it is taller in the front at 1". That does not count the little ball feet. It is a lovely little piece.
