VERY EARLY NATIVE AMERICAN DESIGN BLACK POWDER HORN

Up for auction is a very old powder horn from circa 1700s.

Measurements: It measures 13 inches long, not including the twist, by 3 1/2 inches across at the widest part.

Color & Design: It's made of what appears to be oxen horn and heavily etched and is decorated with foliate and geometric Native American elements and designs. The decoration completely covers the horn and t are no open fields. At the smaller end are stepped terrace elements and then below the framing line are all over floral designs with cross hatching in between the elements. The butt end plug is made of hard wood with a removeable plug for loading and a gap between the plug and the butt to attach a leather or beaded sling for carrying. The pouring end is also allover etched with a small hole drilled into the side for attaching the sling at this end. The wood end plug is attached to the horn with wood dowels.

Condition: The condition is excellent! T is no damage or loss to the designs and the entire horn has patinated from age to a dark brown color. The removeable knob is fully intact and shows signs of use and the splits in the wood are natural flaws. At the pouring end is a 1/4 by 1/4 piece missing at the very tip but is not later damage and has darkened from age and use and has been t a very long time. On the butt end is a 3/4 inch by 3/8 inch remnant of tape that is mostly deteriorated from age.

Markings: The only marking is some red enamel numbers at the top edge of the wooden end plug that appear to be previous collection markings or even previous museum numbers.

This is truly an incredible powder horn in super condition with very unique all over decoration. This would make a great addition to any collection and could be the centerpiece of a black powder horn display and quite a conversation piece!
