A very early (Circa 1700s) sand pontil freeblown storage vessel. These are sometimes refered to as "black glass" but the color is actually a dark olive green. This jar is in exceptional condition, with no cracks or chips, and very little wear. The glass is very crude, with bubbles and character galore. Used in the 1700s to store fruits and dry goods, etc,, they were covered with a piece of leather or cloth ties around the neck, or a"witch ball", a blown glass sp was used to cover the contents. The objectinve was not preservicng, but mainly to keep the dust, bugs and so forth out.! As you can see, the base has a large sand pontil mark around a bill glob of glass in the center. These jars come up for sale only occasionaly, and because they are hand blown, each is unique. This jar is a large example, measuring 11" high by 5 1/2 inches wide at the base. The smaller jar shown is listed separately. It is an extremely rare small jar in brilliant green. Check out my other items ! If you purchase more than one item in a week, please let me know.
